Bollywood Workshop with Queen Harish

Hey Indian Dance Enthusiasts!
Just wanted to let you know about this amazing opportunity to study with a phenomenal dancer currently touring the U.S. See below for details!

**************************************
Bollywood workshop with Queen Harish
Saturday, 7/26
1-3 pm
3435 Cesar Chavez St. between Valencia and Mission, SF
www.migoto.com/queen
$35 pre-registration price; $45 afterwards and at the door
For the advance price, visit: http://queenharish.eventbrite.com/?discount=clandestine

Clandestine is honored to present Queen Harish in an exclusive workshop featuring the "mujra" style of dance, as seen in Bollywood movies such as Devdas and Umrao Jain.

Mujra dance, once an Indian court dance, is a variation on Kathak dance, infused with fast spinning, swift movements, facial expressions, and graceful Persian-influenced hand gestures. The dance form evokes the classical feel of the black and white films produced at the beginning of the Bollywood film era.

No experience in Kathak or Indian dance necessary. The workshop will be a fun and lighthearted way to enjoy the dance form.

Please wear comfortable dance clothes. Full skirts are suggested (they will look lovely when you spin!) but not required.

For more information about Queen Harish, see the bio posted on www.migoto.com/queen, or visit http://queen-harish.blogspot.com/. There's also a fabulous video clip posted on the eventbrite page if you'd like to see him in action in a Bollywood film!

Finally, Queen Harish and the lovely Colleena Shakti will be performing at the Bollyhood Cafe on Wednesday, 7/23. Tickets on sale now at http://queenharish.eventbrite.com! For more information about the show, visit www.electricvardo.com.

Hope to see you there!

Bhangra DVD?

Hello!
As I find myself falling head over heels in love with Bhangra, after having enjoyed the MADAD performance last October and have now attended my first nonstop Bhangra event in January. . .I find myself wondering if there are any recommendations for Bhangra DVDs? I tell friends and family about it, I try to show them what I learned. . .but alas, I fear I'm not doing it justice (judging by the squirrelly looks I’m getting)!! My intention is to start taking the Dholrythms classes down in Sunnyvale, as soon as another class I'm in finishes up later this month. In the meantime, I've been searching for a good Bhangra performance DVD or even a Bhangra "workout" DVD to tide me over. Any suggestions?

Thank you!!

^..^

PS I’ve got a couple good CDs already, it’s the visuals I seem to be lacking. . . ; )

Yep she is along with about 45 other teachers!

Yep, come on by!!!

you can sign up for her class at www.blacksheepbellydance.com .... but ya better gurry!!

Indulge your body and soul with a unique rhythmic experience. Learn the art of Bhangra, a dance like no other that will take your body and soul into new realms. What is Bhangra? Bhangra is an upbeat, energetic, and vibrant folk dance from North India, Punjab Region.

Traditionally done to celebrate the harvest, Bhangra can now be seen at any and all festive occasions celebrated in India particularly weddings. It's perhaps the most vigorous form of South Asian Dances, but also the most free spirited, down to earth and fun.

The main instrument is a large barrel size drum called the dhol. Its hypnotic beats are so contagious and can lure even the most dedicated of wallflowers onto the floor. Bhangra is a such a joyous form of dance that you will be engulfed in its spirit of celebration as soon as you experience it. From Bollywood movies, to cultural melas, to the club scene, bhangra is becoming a popular phenomena and is making its mark in the musical community. T

his class will be a mini crash course in learning all the basics of bhangra that will then be translated into a beautiful choreographed routine that you can use any time you hear the dhol(drum) or incorporate it into other dance routines and performances. The class will make you shake your hips, move your arms, stomp your feet and give you a great cardio workout by indulging your dancing spirits.

Bio:
Vicki Virk was born and raised in Punjab, India, where bhangra originated. She has been dancing to bhangra all of her life. Though she became an attorney, her love and passion for dance inspired her to start her own company called Dholrhythms, that allows her to share her enthusiasm for bhangra through classes, workshops, performances, and events all over the Bay Area.

She currently teaches as many as 10-14 regular weekly classes at different studios, and afterschool kids' programs. She also leads her own dance troupe made up of women from diverse backgrounds, each of whom started off as a student in one of the classes. Dholrhythms dance troupe has been seen mesmerizing audiences with their upbeat, and unique performances at some of the most well known venues in San Francisco including, Stern Grove, Yerba Buena Gardens, Pier39, Sony Metreon, Fort Mason, The Fillmore, The Mezannine, DeYoung Museum, The Supper Club, DNA Lounge, 111 Minna Gallery, 1015 Folsom and many, many more.

Vicki is also the co-founder of NonStop Bhangra (NSB), a monthly event in San Francisco which combines live dhol (drum) & tabla players, dance performances/lessons, visuals, painters and DJ's all dedicated to celebrating the spirit of Bhangra.

Started as an outlet for Dholrhythms students, the event has grown into an amazing community that attracts over 400 diverse people every month that come together to experience bhangra. NSB is making its mark in the San Francisco Culture and has been voted Top 5 Global events in SF. The event has been featured in SF Weekly, The Chronicle, SF Bay Guardian, San Francisco Magazine, along with many other publications. "I love teaching bhangra because it is a celebration of life. It's done with energy, zest and passion and that's exactly how life should be lived."~vicki v~For more information on dholrhythms, Vicki Virk, or bhangra, please visit:

Dhol Rhythms at Licky Benefit 7/7/07

Hey everyone,
We're really excited to have the gorgeous ladies of Dhol Rhythms performing at our event--don't miss them!
Details below.
Beth

*********************************
Electric Vardo Presents: Licky
Saturday, July 7
Doors: 10 p
Show: 10:30ish
$10-20 sliding scale
Il Pirata
2007 16th at Portrero, SF
www.electricvardo.com

Superstar Dance Lineup:
Azure
Clandestine
Dhol Rhythms
Evil Eye Belly Dance
Frederique
Freyja
Red Lotus
Plus a hula show!

DJs
Amar of Electric Vardo
Jimmy Love of Nonstop Bhangra

Licorice (Licky to his friends) is a beautiful 7-year old kitty; he is kind, gentle, and playful, and loves his "mom" Andra so much he'll let her dress him up as a bee (or the pope)…as long as there are treats afterwards, of course! You may know Andra from her tenures in FatChanceBellyDance, Ultra Gypsy, or most recently Azure Tribal Belly Dance.
Licky recently became very ill; after 2 MRIs, blood tests, a vet switch, exploratory surgery, and an extended stay in ICU, he is home now and feeling much better. Unfortunately, all of that added up to a monstrous vet bill: about $10,000! Andra is a preschool teacher and is also getting married in a few months, so Andra's closest friends have banded together to help out with the bill.
What better way to do so than to throw a dance benefit? We have an amazing dance lineup featuring some of the Bay Area's finest in belly dance, bhangra, and hula, plus 2 kickass DJs, and a raffle with fabulous prizes. Andra is performing twice: with the hula group, and with Azure. She and Licky thank you from the bottom of their hearts!

Hope you can make it out. If you can't make it but would like to donate, we'll have a paypal address you can send donations to.

Vancouver International Bhangra Competition Jan 20/21

Hey! In case anyone feels like coming up for a visit... or perhaps, competing? (Deadline for entry Nov. 21)

City of Bhangra

VIBC 2006 will feature events celebrating Bhangra and Punjabi culture throughout downtown Vancouver. Out-of-town competitors and local residents will experience firsthand the joy and exuberance of Bhangra through dance demonstrations, intimate concerts, and interactive discussion forums.

Vancouver has long been a breeding ground for some of the greatest Bhangra talent in the world. This January we bring Bhangra to the forefront and place it in a forum for all to enjoy!

Proposed events

Some tentative events for the Vancouver International Bhangra Celebration include:

-An art exhibit of original work by local artists
-Discussion forums on topics surrounding Bhangra technique,
-Bhangra in the Diaspora, and Bhangra in pop culture
-Dance demonstrations by local Bhangra dance schools
-Concerts featuring local Bhangra and fusion artists

The Competition

The Vancouver International Bhangra Celebration will conclude with the anticipated finale event, the VIBC Competition on Saturday, January 21st, 2006. On this night, 10 international teams will mount the stage of Vancouver's largest theater venue, the Queen Elizabeth Theater. As the largest and most robust venue in Vancouver, it is home to only the largest Broadway productions and theater events. On this night, the Queen Elizabeth will be home to Vancouver's premiere Bhangra event as almost 3,000 local and international attendees watch intently as the most talented Bhangra teams compete for prestige and the $5,000 grand prize.

MADAD: Red Cross Benefit 10/9 in SF

Hey there!
I'm so excited that Dhol Rhythms is going to perform at the following event--I'm going to ask to dance before your set so I can fully enjoy watching you guys. ;-)
Beth

Warning: Cross-posted to other tribes.

Sunday, October 9, Doors at 7 pm
Madad: A Benefit for the Red Cross
$10 suggested donation (but we'll take more, of course)

Madad, a Hindi word for "relief" and "aid," seemed like a perfect
title for this benefit. Lenay of n.o.madic tribal (a New Orleans
tribal belly dance troupe) and Clandestine have organized an evening
of belly dance, bhangra, and go-go performances to help raise money
for the Red Cross. All door proceeds go to the Red Cross (thanks DNA
Lounge!), so not only will you see a kickass show with some of the
finest local dance talent, you will also get some good karma.
We are also collecting costume donations for displaced New Orleans
belly dancers, so feel free to bring any costuming, jewelry, etc.
you'd like to donate and give it to the door person.
Vicki of Dhol Rhythms will give a free bhangra dance lesson right
before the intermission so you can shake your groove thing to the DJs
and try out your new moves!

Dance performances starting at 8 pm by:

Azure
Clandestine
The Devil-Ettes
Dhol Rhythms
FatChanceBellyDance
Frederique (Belly Groove)
n.o.madic
Tempest
Saiidi
Ultra Gypsy

With DJs:
Jimmy Love
Amar
Janaka Selekta

Hello there,

I had a blast at the July NSB and have been eagerly awaiting the next event. Unfortunately, I'll be out of town during this month's.

I have a question. I'm interested in learning dhol drumming. Is there any class offered in San Francisco? I'd love to join one. I know there are several dance classes, but how about drumming?

Thanks for any info,

Really nice to see that S. Asian and World Electronica Breakbeat music is being recognized and actually covered in the mainstream press. Thanks to all the Dhamaal crew and those in the SF music community and beyond that have contibuted to us moving forward!

Kick-ass Dance performances at Palace on Wheels

I was simply amazed by this Saturday's show at New Delhi restaurant. The dance performances were out of this world, from the opening performance with the Dhol Rhythms troupe to Vicki's Solo performance. The night started out with a classical Indian performance to set the scene, an energetic Tabla duet, then Bhangra, bellydance, rajasthani gypsy dance & a fiery bhangra solo by Vicki. It was Hot Hot Hot!

Here's my synapsis of the night.

Jill, Sarah, Frederique, Vicki - Hot night still buzzing in my head!
Last night's performances at Palace on Wheels, our most recent stop on the Electric Vardo, was simply amazing.

I woke up this morning (ok, afternoon) still on a buzz from all of the sultry performances.

The night started out with some live classical Indian music by Ben Kunin on Sarod, followed by a bang-up tabla duo with Jim Santi Owen and Tim Whitter - aka "Tabla Rasa", Jimmy Love on the decks warming the crowd up for the Dhol Rhythms Dance Troupe.

Dhol Rhythms Kicked up the energy into the sky with their highly energetic Bhangra dance performance, followed by some more tracks by Jimmy, and then ... the dance solos ...

Jill Parker slithers her way onto the floor for a seriously moving solo performance (goose bumps), in her usual rock solid vivid style that is trademarked as Jill and truly unique each time she dances. You have to experience Jill to know what I am talking about, it is undescribable - simply breathtaking in every way ...

followed by a brilliant Rajasthani Gypsy dance performance by Ultra Gypsy's Sarah - Gorgeously dressed in the traditional costume of the early gypsys back in India (like I would know :), she spins, she sways, she drops perfectly balanced moves in a whirlwind of passion all her own - the music, her movement, her expression captured my mind and soul. I was born in Rajasthan and have never been back. My mom was captured by her essence when we saw her at July's Electric Vardo, upon Sarah's return from India. My mom looked at me and said her performance really took her back to her childhood watching the local dancers performing. Sarah has somehow captured the essence of the local culture there and brought it back to share with us. That in itself is an especially rare treasure that she holds.

Following that I got to play a couple of tracks to warm up For fredeique's set ...

and then ...

The sexy rockin tribal Electric vibes, like a wind from the east, flow onto the floor, it's Frederique ... by now i'm on stimulation overload (and happy about it), Frederique takes the floor and captures the audience with her powerful expression and smooth yet fierce motion, continuing the flow of heated energy shared with the crowd. After Jill & Sarah's performances, how can anybody continue the flow of lava-like fire. I know someone - Frederique. Yup, if anybody can hold that essence and keep the goose bumps raised on my skin, it is her - and she did.

Following Frederique's set, I spun a few more tracks leading up to Vicki Virk's Solo Performance.
The girl hit the stage, sparks flying from her feet, in an energetic hoppin bhangra set, followed by Jimmy Love spinning bhangra while the crowd danced till the end of the night.

I can't imagine a better night ... Jill, Sarah, Frederique, Vicki - all in one night at one place. Oh yeah baby, sorry if you missed it.
I'm still feeling all dreamy from the night.
