Dholrhythms is an organization dedicated to raising awareness and educating people about the cultural and artistic heritage of India. Dholrhythms hosts classes, workshops, performances, and events all dedicated to sharing the folk dances of Punjab, India known as Bhangra and Giddha.

VISION: to cultivate a boundless, undefined, and unique platform for people of diverse backgrounds to come together, learn something new, express themselves freely and dance in a non-competitive and positive environment.

FOUNDERS: Dholrhythms was created as a work of love by Vicki Virk who was born and raised in Punjab, India and Suman Raj-Grewal who was born and raised on Fiji Islands. Though raised on opposite sides of the world, destiny brought them together to share their passions. Their love for community, culture, outreach, dance, the arts, and empowerment of women gave birth to dholrhythms in 2003.

CLASSES & WORKSHOPS: Dholrhythms offers weekly classes teaching Bhangra to both adults and kids at different studios, as well as afterschool youth enrichment programs, and camps. In addition to weekly classes, Dholrhythms workshops are also featured at all kinds of events and organizations ranging from festivals, cultural shows, fundraisers, galas, all dedicated to preserving the arts and culture.

DHOLRHYTHMS DANCE TROUPE: Dholrhythms dance troupe is an amazing and eclectic group of women, all with a passion and love for the arts and culture. Each of them started as a student in one of the classes and has spent energy and time learning about these dance forms. Founder Vicki Virk’s Punjabi heritage brings forward the ancestral, and ethnic roots of these dances while other members help add their own style and rhythms to the choreography. The result is a fresh and unique synergy of fun, funky, energetic, and absolutely passionate pieces that are as diverse as our dance troupe and the audience they perform in front of.

Since its inception, Dholrhythms has had the privilege of colloborating, performing, and sharing the stage with some of the most innovative and well known artists and organizations in San Francisco Bay Area ranging from World Arts West, Yerba Buena Center For The Arts, Stern Grove Festival, Jewish Contemporary Museum, Pier 39, Oakland Asian Cultural Center, Asian Art Museum, De Young Museum, Power To The Peaceful Festival and many more.

NON STOP BHANGRA: Dholrhythms also co-hosts the monthly event in San Francisco called Non Stop Bhangra with Dj Jimmy Love. Started as an outlet for Dholrhythms students, the event has turned into an amazing community that attracts over 600+ people every month to experience this energetic sound. Celebrating the North Indian sound of Bhangra, Non Stop Bhangra (NSB) is so much more than just the typical club night! NSB is a low-key, fun, energetic, and vibrant experience that combines dj's, dance lesson & performances, live dhol(drum) & tabla players, mc's, visuals, and live painting all dedicated to sharing the spirit of bhangra and keeping the vibe focused on making you dance nonstop. NSB has become a gem in the heart of SF culture, creating sold out nights and write-ups in all the local papers as one of the best dance floor nights in San Francisco.
